Remembering Queen Elizabeth I: A Royal Funeral Fit for a Monarch
Join me as I commemorate the funeral of Queen Elizabeth I, a historic event that took place on this day ...in 1603.
Following Elizabeth I's passing on March 24, 1603, preparations were made for her grand funeral in London. Her body was placed in a lead coffin and transported by torchlit barge along the Thames from Richmond Palace to Whitehall. There, the Queen lay in state with a symbolic effigy atop her coffin, representing the continuity of the monarchy during the interregnum.
On April 28, 1603, a solemn procession conveyed Elizabeth's coffin from Whitehall to Westminster Abbey. The hearse, adorned with black velvet and a rich purple cloth, was led by a party of dignitaries and knights. The Chief Mourner, the Countess of Northampton, led a group of peers dressed in mourning attire. Chronicler John Stow vividly described the overwhelming public display of grief during the procession.
At Westminster Abbey, Elizabeth I was interred in the vault of her grandfather, Henry VII, before being moved to her final resting place in the Lady Chapel in 1606. King James I spared no expense, spending over Β£11,000 on the funeral and commissioning a magnificent white marble monument to honour the two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary I, who rest together in hope of resurrection.
Explore the legacy of Queen Elizabeth I through this poignant moment in English history, a testament to her enduring impact on the nation and the monarchy.

π On this day in Tudor history, 8th June 1536, exactly three weeks after Queen Anne Boleyn's execution, Henry VIII's Parliament met to pass the Second Act of Succession. This ...act removed his daughters Mary and Elizabeth from the line of succession, declaring them illegitimate.
π With Anne Boleynβs fall and the annulment of her marriage to Henry, the act paved the way for Jane Seymourβs future children to inherit the throne. π Meanwhile, on this same day, Mary Tudor wrote to her father, seeking his forgiveness and hoping to return to his favour.
